Ventspils University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the European Space Agency start project PECS

sept. 18, 2018

In September Ventspils University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the European Space Agency started a project on investigating feasibility of adapting RT-16 radio telescope for use in satellite ground segment.

Project “Establishing nanosatelite ground station by adapting RT-16 radio telescope infrastructure – Feasibility study” is funded under European Space Agency (ESA) third call for Outline Proposals under the “Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS) in Latvia”.

The aim of the project is to assess both technical and economic feasibility for adapting the “Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre’s (VIRAC)” radio telescope RT-16 for use in satellite ground segment.

Adapting RT-16 for ground station use would increase market potential of VIRAC’s services as well as it would help to advance VIRAC’s electronics and satellite communication department by aiding development of novel solutions in field of satellite communications which is one of the main goals of this department.
