The first successful observation of distant objects using Irbene local interferometer in VLBI mode

maijs 13, 2019

6-12 May achievement of the week: author astronomy technician Jānis Šteinbergs

On 2 May of this year, VLBI observation using VIRAC radio telescopes RT-32-RT16 was carried out in the local interferometer mode. This observation was the first observation in which a natural source was observed using both radio telescopes. Based on the obtained results it is possible to conclude that the technical complex of both radio telescopes is "in working order" after the renovation of both telescopes, receivers and time standard updates. Previous observations of this type failed due to technical problems.

From observation planning to data processing and interpretation of results, the tasks were performed by the VIRAC team in cooperation with three VIRAC structural units - the Astronomy Department, the High Performance Computing Department and Technical Operation group. The obtained results confirm a high level of competence and experience accumulated over time.
