FlexBuff servers for data storage have been purchased

VIRAC, as a member of Very-long-baseline Interferometry Network (EVN, http://www.evlbi.org/), with its RT-32 and RT-16 radio telescopes, together with more than 25 world observatories on regular basis participates in VLBI radio astronomical observation sessions.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

In the course of radio astronomical observations, the radio telescope data reception and registration complex receives radio radiation (waves) and converts them into digital form. Currently, the amount of data within one EVN regular session (session duration 2-3 weeks) from VIRAC telescopes reaches 70-100 TB and it is growing every year. After recording the observed data on a data server located in the VIRAC radio telescope complex, it is necessary to transfer the obtained data to Dwingeloo, the Netherlands, where the obtained data is processed. Previously, data transfer from the VIRAC radio telescope antenna complex was done by courier by sending a special disk package (8 HDD disks in each package), where the cost of sending each package was from 150 to 400 Euro, on average such shipments were made 3-4 times a year.


Taking into account the fact that the VSRC radio telescope complex is connected to JIV-ERIC with a 10 Gbps optical data transmission line and the fact that the obtained data can be transmitted via the Internet quickly and without additional costs, for the implementation of this goal within the project No. 1.1.1.4/17/I/010 two data servers were purchased as part of the “3rd round of modernization of the Irbene radio telescope complex”, where one data server will be located in the VIRAC antenna complex in Irbene, and the other will be delivered and installed at the JIV-ERIC data processing centre in Dwingaloo, the Netherlands. Implementing this idea will significantly reduce data delivery costs and increase the security of data delivery/receipt.
